Have you ever read 'Little Women'?

....I have set up a post office office in the hedge in the lower corner of the garden...
...I've stopped up the door, and made the roof open, so it will hold all sorts of things, and save our valuable time. Letters, manuscripts, books and bundles can be passed in there...
~ Louisa May Alcott

My Kate reminded me of the passage from her favorite book as a child. When she was around 5 years old, I spent six months reading a few pages at a time to her during our quiet moments in the afternoons while the babe of the time, my Andy, napped.
Upon arriving at the farm last week with her sons and seeing our work-in-progress playhouse, Kate said right away that we needed mailboxes... to pass letters and bundles and all sorts of things back and forth from the playhouse and the farm house.
Naturally, the grandsons and I went in search of some mail box making material.
Behind the barn, in the lean-to shed, Papa Fritz had stored a couple of bird feeders saved from felled trees.
Perfect. The roof on each even opens.

Hope you have a very Lovely Day,

Hi Joan! Wow this was such a lovely post, what a great memory that you and Kate share :) And now you get to do the same with her gorgeous little boys which I am sure you are loving having visit you in Virginia!!
You know, I have this book in my list of books to read by the end of the year! It's been a long time...
Btw, Kate looks like her mum :)
Popping by from Daffodils, your farm looks beautiful!

I LOVE this! One of the things Kate and I first bonded over was when she posted pictures of your visit and referred to you as Marme and I asked, "As in Little Women?!"

Orchard House was the focus of MANY trips to Mass. when I was growing up - it became a yearly pilgrimage.

These photos are amazing, and what perfect memories for the boys to have growing up!

Isn't it wonderful doing some of the 'old' things with some of the 'new' little people. Being a granny is a marvellous thing.
